About Matthew G

I am a former Starting Strength Coach. I worked with Starting Strength originally at the Austin location, eventually transferring to Katy to help establish a new gym. While doing my graduate studies, I worked at Paradigm physical therapy in Midland Texas. I have experience working with athletes, patients, and geriatric clientele. I have worked virtually with clients across the United States, in Canada, and in the UK. Though I am a barbell specialist, I can utilize many tools and program based on the individual. I have the most experience training MMA and BJJ athletes as far as athletes go, and post-menopausal women for the other end of the spectrum. As far as niche clientele go, I have trained individuals recovering from various cancers, strokes, and various surgeries. I am a precision nutrition certified nutritionist though I follow the practices of Lyle McDonald. I do not have experience leading extreme cuts for athletes but I have programmed for athletes going through these extreme cuts.

Training Philosophy
Start with what you can do and progress in a way that is measurable and predictable.

Training Professionally Since
January 2, 2013

Typical Training Session

I will begin with a general physical assessment based on my perceptions of age, mobility, etc. I will have a physical assessment of how you perform a squat/modification of the squat, movement overhead, and your ability to hinge at the hips. During this process I will we discuss goals and possible limitations. I want to know what all you do outside of the gym, what your goals from training are, and your current perception of fitness. I will then discuss my plan moving forward. I start with general and move towards complex as we figure out how your body responds to what we are doing. Unless you are a barbell specific athlete or bodybuilder, the gym is not your whole life. The gym is supposed to improve your performance outside of the gym, not detract from it. If you are a barbell athlete or bodybuilder, you have different priorities and must make different compromises.

Hobbies
BJJ, climbing, Fly fishing, snowboarding, leather craft, and so many more.
